“Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am.” – Parker Palmer

When asked what is your calling most people are unsure. Why? The reason we don’t hear it is because we don’t listen to our heart, our head and the people around us. Should you intentionally seek out a calling or wait for it come to you? It is a ‘calling’ after all! The good news is the calling is already seeking you out!

Our Calling and Work

When you think of the word ‘calling’ you quickly associate it with work. There are two phases to the calling, first is hearing, seeing and acknowledging ‘the call.’ The second is executing on it… ‘the work’ part. While many people can turn their calling into a full time paying gig, many others use their full time paying vocation to fund their calling ‘after hours.’ You may want to quit your job to chase your calling because it’s ‘getting in the way,’ but maybe you are called to do something in addition to work.

Do we have to be fully engaged in our calling all the time? 100% focus? Probably not. That’s exhausting. Another reason your calling may not be your full time vocation.

Our Calling and Happiness

Do you have to be happy and joyous in your calling? People get really stuck in believing that if they are not really happy they are not in their calling. Life is full of negative emotions, hard times and overall crap. To believe our calling will deliver us from all of this is unrealistic.

Our calling will fulfill us throughout the journey. Perhaps years (or even decades) in what seems like a dead-end job is preparing us for that calling. What if the first three quarters of our life is to prepare us for the calling near the end?

Our Calling and God

I believe we are being called 100% of the time. If you believe in God, you can bet this is where it’s coming from. One of my favorite quotes to support my theory is from Oswald Chambers:

“God did not direct His call to Isaiah— Isaiah overheard God saying, “. . . who will go for Us?” The call of God is not just for a select few but for everyone. Whether I hear God’s call or not depends on the condition of my ears, and exactly what I hear depends upon my spiritual attitude.”

How To Fulfill Your Calling

On the Great People Show we talked our way into a three-step process to fulfill the calling.

  1. Examine things carefully. Your calling is surrounding you.
  2. Barriers are indicators of your calling. Your calling is designed to be good and will be kept from your naturally. Looking directly through the barrier is probably where you will find it.
  3. Look for the open doors. Be relentless and resourceful to find your way around the barriers.

Is the status quo keeping you from your calling? Are you ignoring your calling because you are scared if it?
